Prozac Causing Insomnia?

During the era of the late eighties through the early nineties Prozac was prominent as the novel wonder medicine and was said to be the predominant cure for depression which was condoned by a large amount of medical professionals around the world. Prozac was later disregard by medical professionals when it came to light that it may incite suicidal tendencies when taken by patients regularly. Today the use of Prozac is attempting to make a come back in the most unlikely of places, which is in the area of law enforcement, mainly in British prisons.

Internet news this past June detailed that a recent plan of the UK to manage sex offenders by feeding these select inmates Prozac in order to manage their behavior as it has the effect on patients prescribed this medication of being calm as lambs. It seemed as though the British government has become overwhelmed with Prozac medicine, especially its calming effects. A plan was devised to drug locked up inmates along with sex offenders; in doing this they looked forward to docile prisoners a well as shackling their libidos so they could not perpetrate any other dreadful crimes.

The plan called for 100 prisoners that could commence in 9 different prisons to serve as the first recipients of the inmates administered Prozac in the British prison system. British authorities said if the plan worked they would proceed in administering Prozac to at least 10% of the total prison population to observe if it had the same affect of calming the inmates down.

To an extent this plan was a unique way of coming within reach of solving the problem related to sex offenders and other disruptive inmates. You might say this was a type of psychological and emotional way of castrating the inmate. Also, that this approach is not a decent or principled way to control these inmates as it can be considered the same as drugging a human being. In addition to the moral issue of drugging prisoners there is also the large controversial history related to this drug in question.

Prozac was the leader of prescription drugs prescribed for the American public in the year 1988 in addition to other countries making it one of the most popular prescription drugs all around. Millions of people flocked to the physician and then the drugstore to buy this new drug that laid a healing hand on the raw nerves of Americans and other nationalities with its calming effect.

After all of the buzz about this prescription drug came private scientific studies showing that this medication was capable of causing genetic changes. This occurred either when taking a larger amount or for an extended amount of time and the effects of Prozac were known to cause insomnia disease.

In the year 1990, Prozac came under severe attack and accusations that it lead to insomnia in patients prescribed this medication. This fact was never proven, however it tarnished the image of Prozac doing irreparable harm to the drug.
