What Is Sleep Insomnia and Is There A Cure?
When a person suffers from insomnia they are often referred to as an insomniac and in general terms this is a person who has difficulty sleeping. There are some people who suffer from insomnia that can easily fall asleep and after a short amount of rest are wide awake for the rest of the night, then there are others who can not fall asleep but might doze during the night for a short time. There are some cures that have been developed using therapy and while the are several ways of combating this disorder there is no specific one that will work for every person suffering from insomnia.
Insomnia is a widely recognized sleeping disorder and medical research has shown that it can be caused by different factors, such as stress, depression and in some cases of mental illness, along with other illness that may cause sleeplessness. Some of these illnesses are patients who suffer from chronic pain or congestive heart failure and patients who have chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, also known as COPD.
There are several things that are recommended that the person suffering insomnia can do on their own to help the body and mind to relax, as well as some things that should be avoided. It is suggested exercising early in the day and avoiding large or heavy meals prior to bedtime and limit the amount of liquids consumed.
The bedroom is also important, light, noise and temperature can all disrupt sleep, these should be taken into consideration when preparing the room. Addressing other medical conditions is also recommended along with some types of therapy.
Behavioral Therapy: This treatment has proven to be effective for many who suffer from insomnia. In this therapy the patient is educated in ways to address better sleeping habits.
Techniques: With this type of therapy the patient is taught ways to clear the mind in a way that will relax the body and rid the mind and body of stress. In order to accomplish this breathing exercises are used along with stretching and meditation. In some cases the use of music or reading can also be employed.
Stimulus Control: This is a therapy where conditioning the mind psychologically to feel comfortable in the bedroom and in the bed.
Biofeedback: Using an electrocephalogram machine to see brain wave activity it is possible to tell what is going on with a patient and what type of mood they are in prior to sleep.
If these methods of treating insomnia do not assist the patient in sleeping there are drugs that can be used to treat the person suffering from losing more sleep. Some of these medications are used for sleeping and some are used for anxiety.
Over the counter sleeping medications are not recommended for a person suffering from insomnia as they will lose their effect over time with regular use and they contain a chemical called diphenhydramine and this can cause a drowsy feeling in the day time and it can also cause difficulty in urination.
