Is Marijuana A Cure For Insomnia Or Is It The Cause?

Is marijuana a cure for insomnia or is it the cause? That has not been determined clearly. However before discussing the effects of marijuana on insomnia, lets us go through what insomnia actually is briefly. When you find yourself struggling to fall asleep and when you get up in the morning, you feel restless due to the poor quality of sleep; it is possible that you have insomnia. The most common causes of insomnia are medications, psychological conditions such as anxiety, depressions and changes in environment. It can be also due to stressful event or excessive use of caffeine, alcohol or tobacco. Insomnia is not an incurable disease. Certain types of medication and therapies can cure it. It is also believed that marijuana can cure insomnia.

People have used marijuana as a medicine for thousand of years though it has now been declared illegal in almost everywhere. Marijuana produces a kind of mind-altering effect, which induces complete rest and sleep. It is regarded as a medical herb because of its potential medical benefits. Marijuana contains at least more than 60 chemicals including cannabinoids. This chemical known as the cannabinoid is use to treat certain kind of medical conditions. When smoked or eaten, the cannabinoid found in marijuana acts on the receptor cells in our brain especially the areas that control our body movement and memory. Marijuana use affects co-ordination and balance thus reducing anxiety and depression. Moreover, marijuana is also widely used as pain relief.

It is believed that smoking marijuana before bedtime gives a complete rest and a good sleep and also doesn’t have any lingering hangovers or side effects in the morning. After smoking marijuana, a joyous feeling comes up and gradually changes into a fulfilling feeling of calmness and relaxation. The most important effect of marijuana is an intensification of the emotional condition you are in, but it varies a lot from person to person. Some people use marijuana to overcome insomnia and they find it helpful however, marijuana is highly addictive and has got many side effects. The side effects are not determined clearly though after smoking marijuana the personal condition like your mood at the moment you use, changes and it can lead you to do negative things.

For an insomniac patient, smoking marijuana can give them a strong appetite. They can also change their restless mood to an uncontrollable fit of laughter. Therefore, some people really believe that marijuana can make them overcome their nightmares of insomnia because of its drowsiness and sleep inducing quality. On the contrary, some people think marijuana cause insomnia. It also happens that while quitting marijuana after using it for a long time, the withdrawal reflects on the brain giving them stress and sleepless nights. In some case, marijuana users experienced anxiety, depressions and stress, which led them to insomnia. It is still yet to be found out whether it really cures insomnia or if it is the cause. It differs from person to person and their experiences. Marijuana may cause insomnia or may help in curing insomnia.

Marijuana can effect different people in very different ways, just like any other drug some people can experience effects that other people don’t. It’s just a case of being sensible and monitoring how you react.

I was reading this article trying to figure out if marijuana is a cure for insomnia since it has worked for me (i have anxiety issues) up until the part

“marijuana is highly addictive and has got many side effects”

which is a complete lie. I’ve been smoking cannabis since high school on and off (up to 6 month gap from sessions) and have had no signs of addiction. I do know what addiction is i used to take caffeine pills to get through the day and stopped and i went through a series of withdrawals migraines/late night shakes, now i need at least a cup of coffee in the morning or i get small headaches.

The only side affect I’ve ever had is speaking my mind while on the high anything i think comes out of my mouth and it can be bad at times.

I frequently use marijuana for recreational purposes, and find that after stints of frequent periods of use I experience insomnia as a withdrawal symptom. While using I have no problem falling and staying asleep, but during complete withdrawal I have difficulty sleeping for more than a few hours at a time, and usually wake up soaked with sweat and wide awake. These side effects generally subside after a few days, as does my desire to acquire more marijuana. I have spoken with other users and these effects seem to vary from person to person. Also interestingly, members of my family who also partake have similar withdrawal symptoms, so it may be a genetic side effect. I would like to know more about this, but as it is an illegal substance in most regions, very little scientific research has been done. I Hope this helps anyone else who has this experience.

    Not a valid claim.

“marijuana is highly addictive and has got many side effects.”

Wrong! highly addictive = physical addiction.. it is a psychological addiction people form with cannabis .. just as certain people become addicted to sex, gambling, tv, internet.

    Marijuana is NOT physically addictive.

I’ve been using marijuana for medical purposes for the past 3 years after suffering a terrible car crash. I can truly say that marijuana has changed my life in ways no other drug has done. Now i can sleep well, eat well (the meds screwed my stomach and was never hungry)and most of all helps relieve the pain. Thank you MJ

addiction is a state of mind…….. marijuana is not addicting…..

  11. Lucas - March 7th, 2010 at 9:59 pm

This document seems to lack medical/ scientific backing, its articulation is poor for example in the forth paragraph marijuana “change their restless mood….” not they. The jury is still out on the addictive nature of marijuana and is not “highly addictive”
