Insomnia is a sleep disorder that causes the person suffering from it to lose sleep, have difficulty falling asleep or wakes within a few hours of going to sleep even when they feel tired. This is a disorder that is becoming more common in today’s world because it is a stressful life filled with work and little time for relaxation. This also includes eating a proper diet, which is often because work and other daily schedules force people to eat on the go or little time to prepare a balanced diet.
According to statistics there are over 60 million people that suffer from insomnia to some degree in the United States and this also shows more women suffer from insomnia than men. There is also some research that shows evidence that the chance of developing insomnia increases with age. Insomnia can occur in different degrees lasting a short amount of time or an extended amount of time.
Insomnia affects people for different reasons and some of the factors that can be present are anxiety and stress, along with other reasons that cause a person to develop this disorder. These may not be the main reasons for the insomnia but a contributing factor along with other disease or illness, side affects from medication and even a change in a person’s environment. When insomnia is brought on by anxiety or stress the use of sleeping pills is not the answer to the problem, while it may help with sleep it will not be a natural sleep where the mind and body can regenerate. Instead the reason for the anxiety or stress should be dealt with and alleviated or treated to gain control of the insomnia.
One such treatment hypnosis, this is an ancient art that has been used to treat many different afflictions of the mind and with the use of hypnosis it is possible to relax the mind. This type of treatment is done by a hypnotherapist who is a professional in this art of relaxing the mind and body and alleviating the feeling of anxiety or stress. There are many benefits to this type of treatment, the first is the feeling of being relaxed will stay with the insomniac giving them a full nights rest in most cases. Another reason this treatment is beneficial is because as it is not a medication there are no side effects that will be a part of the treatment for the patient.
There are also methods of self-hypnosis that can be learned and the insomniac can put them to use when it is time for sleep to gain a regular sleep pattern. There is much information that can be found on the subject of self-hypnosis and there is no danger of misuse with it as are found with sleeping pills and other medications. Hypnosis is a natural treatment and as such will work differently than prescription medications that have known side effects and can become addicting. This is a treatment that will have no side effects and it will have results in most cases for the person suffering from insomnia.

Hypnosis works well for insomnia because it relaxes your body and mind. Listening to soothing hypnotic tapes may keep your mind off whatever is keeping you awake. Also, going to bed and rising at the same time every day, avoiding alcohol and caffeine, stimulating activities, etc. will help you get the required 7-8 hours of sleep that your body needs to function properly.I read that Bananas are practically a sleeping pill in a peel. In addition to soothing melatonin and serotonin, bananas contain magnesium, a muscle relaxant. Warm milk with a little honey has some tryptophan, an amino acid that has a sedative-like effect, and calcium, which helps the brain use tryptophan.
More insight…I once went to a hypnotherapist to help me with my insomnia and she pointed out to me a very valuable fact: babies NEVER get insomnia. Translation being that insomnia is all in our heads. I try to keep this in mind when I am up at 3am…
