There are many people who are suffering from the common disorder that is acknowledged as insomnia. Insomnia is an illness where a person has difficulty sleeping or falling asleep. Children can also suffer from the disorder known as insomnia just as many adults suffer from this disorder. This is a childhood disorder that is becoming more common today than ever before and most cases of childhood insomnia are not outgrown, but can be treated with medication. For parents that become aware of irregular sleep patterns keeping a child awake and on a regular schedule may prevent this disorder in their child.
Childhood insomnia can occur for many reasons, stress can be one as well as certain types of medication and there are other factors that can contribute to childhood insomnia.
Insomnia can be difficult for an adult to face and it is no less daunting for a child to have difficulty sleeping or falling into a sleep only to wake a few hours later and be wide awake while it is still dark and the rest of the household is asleep. Children can also have problems with their attention span or memorizing due to their lack of proper sleep or waking many times during the night.
Bad sleeping habits can also contribute to childhood insomnia in the child who is up late each night watching television or on the telephone or other factors that keep them from having enough sleep and it can then lead to a pattern of bad sleeping habits.
Properly diagnosing a child should be done by the physician without delay, as childhood insomnia can also be related to some other type of illness or medication the child might be on. The proper treatment cannot be given for a child without being diagnosed with insomnia and once they have been there are many treatment options to help the child begin proper sleep habits.
Treatment for the child with insomnia can include prescription medication, but there are also other types of treatment that can often be used rather than prescription medication. First treatment of another medical problem can relieve a child of insomnia, such as sleep apnea or bad tonsils. In the case of stress related insomnia a child might speak with a psychologist to discuss their feelings and problems, this can relieve them of the burden that is making them loose sleep.
Regulating a consistent bedtime and learning relaxation techniques can often help a child to regain control of their sleep hours. Also avoiding caffeine in their diet and this will include many types of soda that include caffeine or chocolate, which often has caffeine.
